Picking your blog name and niche is the #1 decision that decides if your blog succeeds or fails. Get it wrong and you’ll quit in 3 months.

In this post, you’ll learn how to pick a niche that makes money + a blog name that people remember. Takes 20 minutes. Do this before writing Post #6.

What Is a Blog Niche? And Why It Matters

Niche = Your blog topic. Not “everything”. Pick ONE topic.

Bad niches: “My life”, “Random thoughts”, “News + Food + Tech”. Google won’t know what your blog is about. Readers won’t subscribe.

Good niches: “Blogger tutorials for beginners”, “Vegan recipes under 30 min”, “Budget travel in Nigeria”. Specific = Google ranks you faster.

Step 1: Pick Your Niche Using 3 Questions

Answer these in a notebook:

1. What do I know?

List 5 things you can talk about for 1 hour without Googling. Examples: cooking jollof, fixing Android phones, makeup for dark skin, Blogger templates.

2. What do people search for?

Go to Google. Type your idea + “how to”. If Google shows 10+ suggestions, people search it. That’s good.

Example: Type “how to use blogger” → Google shows “how to use blogger for beginners”, “how to use blogger template”. That niche has traffic.

3. Can I make money from it?

Search “your niche + affiliate program” or “your niche + adsense earnings”. If companies sell products in your niche, you can make money.

Best niches for beginners 2025:

Niche Why It Works AdSense RPM
Blogger/WordPress Tutorials Huge search volume, easy AdSense $5-15
Personal Finance Nigeria Banks pay high for ads $8-25
Android Phone Tips Everyone has phones $3-10
Recipes - Nigerian Food Massive Pinterest traffic $2-8
Make Money Online High AdSense + affiliates $10-30

Avoid these niches as beginner: News, celebrity gossip, medical advice, general tech. Too competitive or need expert license.

Step 2: Choose Your Blog Name - 5 Rules

Your blog name = brand. Follow these rules:

Rule 1: Keep It Short - Under 15 Characters

Good: BloggerPro, NaijaTech, EasyRecipes
Bad: TheBestBloggerTutorialGuideForBeginners2025

Short = easy to type, remember, say on YouTube.

Rule 2: Include a Keyword

Put your niche word in the name. Helps Google + humans know what you do.

Examples:
Niche = Blogger → BloggerGuide, BloggerHelp, ProBloggerTips
Niche = Recipes → QuickRecipes, NaijaKitchen

Rule 3: Avoid Numbers and Hyphens

Bad: blogger-tips-2025, blogger4u
Why: Hard to say. “Is it blogger dash tips dash 2025?” People forget.

Rule 4: Check If.com Is Available

Even if you use.blogspot.com now, you’ll buy.com later. Check now.

  1. Go to Namecheap.com
  2. Search your name idea
  3. If yourname.com is taken, change your blog name now

Rule 5: Say It Out Loud

If you can’t pronounce it, people won’t share it. Avoid weird spellings like BloggerzGuide.

  2. Google: Search “your name blog”. If 10 blogs already use it, pick new name.
  3. Social media: Check instagram.com/yourname, twitter.com/yourname. You want same name everywhere.

Step 4: Change Your Blog Name in Blogger

If you already created your blog in Post #1, update the name now:

3 Niche + Name Mistakes That Kill Blogs

  1. Mistake 1: Too broad → “Lifestyle blog”. Fix: Pick “Skincare for oily skin in Nigeria”
  2. Mistake 2: Copying big sites → Name = “TechCrunchNG”. People think you’re fake. Be original.
  3. Mistake 3: Changing niche every month → Google gets confused and drops you. Pick 1 niche, stay 1 year.
