How to Backup and Restore Blogger Blog

No backup = lose 5 years of posts in 1 click. Hack or Google suspend = everything gone.

In this tutorial, you'll backup and restore your Blogger blog safely. Follow along and you'll never lose content again in 2025.

Step 1: Why You Must Backup Blogger Every Month

Blogger is free but Google can delete blogs anytime. Backups save you.

  1. Reason 1: Accidental deletion. You delete 1 post, click wrong button = all gone
  2. Reason 2: Google suspension. Spam flag or DMCA = blog locked
  3. Reason 3: Theme errors. Bad code = blog crashes, can't access dashboard
  4. Rule: Backup posts monthly + theme after every major edit

Step 2: Backup All Posts, Pages, and Comments

This exports everything as XML file. Takes 1 minute.

  1. Blogger → Settings → Scroll to "Manage blog"
  2. Click "Back up content" → Download
  3. Save file: blog-2025-07-31.xml to Google Drive + PC
  4. What's included: All posts, pages, comments, labels
  5. Not included: Images, theme, layout widgets. Do separately

Step 3: Backup Blogger Theme XML

Theme controls design. If broken, blog looks dead. Backup before editing.

  1. Theme → Click 3 dots top right → Backup
  2. Save file: theme-2025-07-31.xml
  3. When to backup: Before Edit HTML, before changing templates
  4. Pro tip: Name files with date so you know which is latest

Step 4: Backup Images from Blogger

XML backup doesn't save images. Google Photos deleted old Blogger albums in 2019.

MethodHow ToBest For
Google Takeouttakeout.google.com → Deselect all → Blogger → ExportAll images at once
Manual SavePosts → Edit → Right click image → SaveOnly featured images
Browser ExtensionImage Downloader extension → Download allBlogs with 100+ images

Step 5: How to Restore Blogger Blog from Backup

Use this if blog deleted, hacked, or broken after update.

  1. Restore posts: Settings → Manage blog → Import content → Upload XML file
  2. Check "Automatically publish all imported posts" → Import
  3. Restore theme: Theme → 3 dots → Restore → Upload theme XML
  4. Restore images: Re-upload manually to each post if Takeout fails
  5. Check: View blog → Test all pages work → Check Search Console for 404s

Bad practice to avoid: Importing backup on same blog twice = duplicate posts. Create new blank blog to test restore first.

Important: Backup does NOT save Blogger followers or stats. Those are lost forever if blog deleted. Set Google Calendar reminder: "Backup Blogger" on 1st of every month. Keep 3 copies: PC, Google Drive, USB.
